From Dagger to Gauntlet: A Cover Up by Leo
Sometimes a tattoo just isn't it anymore. Maybe it faded weird, maybe it doesn't fit who you are these days, or maybe it's just time for something bigger and better. This client came into the studio wanting something new and Leo delivered with an absolute unit of a cover up: a spiked, armoured medieval gauntlet wrapping around the inner arm, dripping in gold hardware, chainmail, flame and blood.
The old tattoo, a small traditional dagger and heart piece with a "Forever" banner, had done its time. It was solid, simple, and honestly a decent little tattoo, but it wasn't going to hold up as a base for something this ambitious. Leo took the challenge and built an entirely new piece around it, using bold linework, heavy shading and a deep, saturated colour palette to fully absorb the old work into the new design.
Cover ups are a different beast to a tattoo on fresh skin. You're not just designing something cool, you're designing something that has to beat what's underneath it. That's where bold traditional and neo-traditional styles really shine.
Thick black outlines do the heavy lifting. A strong black line is one of the most effective tools for visually breaking up and containing old ink. It gives the eye something new and confident to follow, so the original tattoo stops reading as its own shape.
Saturated colour hides more than you'd think. Traditional tattooing leans on bold, solid colour fills rather than soft gradients, and solid colour is exactly what you need to sit on top of old pigment without it ghosting through. The deep greens and rich golds in this piece aren't just a style choice, they're doing real work.
Scale and contrast create distraction. A bigger design with strong contrast pulls focus away from any trace of what came before. The old tattoo becomes a shadow, not a distraction.
If you've got an old tattoo you've fallen out of love with, bold traditional might just be the answer. Come talk to us about what's possible.
